Your bedroom is the one room in the house where you're supposed to be able to relax fully and completely.
It's supposed to be a room where you can forget the worries of the day, slip into your pyjamas and enjoy a quality and peaceful night's sleep.
It's for this reason why it's important you take the time to update and makeover your bedroom every once in a while, as if you leave it exactly as it stands for several years, you'll become too accustomed to how it looks, aren't likely to keep on top of the cleaning and tidying as much and generally won't be able to relax to the required extent.
Many people believe that a room makeover needs a lot of time and money to be invested, but these five points show you how you can give your bedroom a quick and easy makeover.
1. Paint three of the four walls a neutral colour - whether you have your bedroom skimmed or you put lining paper up, start your makeover by painting three of the four walls a clean, neutral colour, preferably one that is calming and soothing, such as creams, light browns or any muted shade of your favourite colour.
2. Use a feature wall - on the remaining wall you didn't paint a neutral colour, put up some wallpaper that you particularly like, but which isn't over the top and harsh on the eyes. The idea behind this is to develop a modern feel to the room and an area that draws your attention to it, but not to the extent that it's going to distract you from getting to sleep.
3. Get a new carpet - outside of the bathroom, the bedroom is likely to be the only place where you spend a lot of time without any socks or shoes on and it's for this reason why you need to have a comfortable surface underneath your feet.
As great as floorboards or laminate flooring looks, it does nothing for your touch sense, especially on a cold winter's morning.
And if you just have to have floorboards or laminate flooring instead of a carpet, make sure you invest in a good quality carpet to put near to your bed, so your feet touch something soft last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
4. Update your window decorations - whether you've got blinds or curtains, it's advised that you take a look at whether there are different varieties available to suit your needs.
For instance, if you only have curtains up at the minute, consider having some blinds installed, as they can allow a sufficient amount of natural light in, while also blocking out the view from the outside should you not want people always being able to look into your bedroom, but don't want to have your curtains closed all day.
5. Get the light right - having the correct type of light in your bedroom is imperative to ensuring you relax properly, as if you lay down on your bed to read your book at night and you only have the room's main light to use, you'll not only be straining your eyes because of the brightness, but when you're relaxed and falling off to sleep, you'll have to disturb yourself to get out of bed and turn the light off.
Purchase some bedside lamps or invest in a dimmer switch and any additional accessories for your main light - an on / off switch close to your bed, for example, would be ideal..
Giving your bedroom a makeover every once in a while is always strongly recommended and these five points show how you can do it quickly and easily.
