So you've decided to go with a classic Father's Day present - good for you! But before you sigh a deep breath, roll your eyes or cringe over your decision, remember that this doesn't mean it has to be a standard or a last resort go-to gift idea. Anything but. Here are three inventive ways to surprise your dad with a thoughtful men's necktie:
Multiple Colors of the Same Pattern
The title pretty much sums it up. If you know your dad likes a particular type of pattern, purchase three ties in different color schemes. Typical types of patterns include stripes, plaid, polka dots (and smaller pin dots), solid colors, floral motifs and last by not least, paisley.
Many local and online retailers offer several color choices of your father's favorite patterned neckwear, so once you find a necktie you know he'll love, pick out two more in complementary hues. Or if that is too colorful, go with one color and opt for a few shades. For example, red ranges from pastel pink to hot pink, from true red to shades incorporating a touch of orange or purple. And don't forget burgundy!
Geometric Ties
This style of neckwear doesn't neatly fit into any of the other categories. It includes all of the other shapes you'll often see, such as squares, triangles, diamonds, parallelograms, fleur-de-lis, Greek keys, zig zag, and curlicues, often in repeating fashion. They include herringbone, hounds tooth, cross hatch, checkerboard, and Persian all over patterns. Polka dots shaped like ovals, flowerets, hexagons and octagons fall into this classification. One of the more unusual neckties is made by both Cocktail Collection and Molecular Expressions, whose designs represent what various drinks and cocktails look like when highly magnified under the microscope.
Other times, these types of ties combine two or more of the standard patterns for a completely unique look. These accessories bring interest to an ensemble because they can't readily and immediately be recognized and require people to take a second and third look at the person wearing them.
I would even venture to include random, amorphous and non repetitive shapes in this class of neckwear, such as camouflage, batik, and tie dyed styles. I am often reminded of Jerry Garcia neckties, what with their unique designs and artistic touches.
Vintage Ties for a Totally Unique Look
Neckwear as we know it today was produced as early as the 1920's and through the 1980's and is considered vintage. It was made by the thousands back then as it is today, but only a handful has survived over the 80+ years. These one-of-a-kind pieces of wearable art are sure to please even the most discriminating dad!
Mid century Mad Men style skinny vintage neckties are very popular today, as are their 1980's era retro counterparts.
In Conclusion
You don't have to look hard to find something out of the ordinary and as special as dear old dad!
