How To Determine The Best Red Lipstick For You

Red lipsticks are probably one of those makeup items that are sure to make an impression. One of the most popular examples of women wearing red lipstick confidently is probably Marilyn Monroe with her blonde hair, iconic beauty mark, and of course, those bright red lips While you might feel a little iffy about your ability to rock this bold color, don't worry, there has to be a perfect shade of red out there for you. And these tips might just help you find it!

A person's complexion is an important part of his or her appearance, which is why determining whether you have warm or cool skin tone is the first step to finding that perfect shade. Those with golden undertones in their skin are considered to have warm skin tone. And it's flattered by gold jewelries. People with cool skin tone usually have a pink undertone beneath their skin. Instead of gold, cool skin tone tends to look better with silver jewelry.

A neat trick Kelsium of Persephone Magazine recommends for finding out whether you have warm or cool skin tone is fairly simple and easy to do: all you need a piece of white paper and a mirror. First, stand in front of the mirror with the white paper beneath your face in natural light. Close your eyes for a few seconds and reopen them. Is the first thing that you see the white paper? If so, then you have warm skin tone. If it's vice-versa, that means you have cool skin tone. And after you know whether you have warm or cool-toned skin, you can find many other cosmetic items that compliment your skin tone easier-like foundations, eye shadows, and blushes.

Lipsticks with brown and burgundy undertones tend to flatter people with warm tone more than cool tone. On the other hand, blue-based and coral lipsticks will probably compliment cool-toned skin.

Another way to choose lipstick is to determine whether you have fair, medium, or dark colored skin. Women with fair skin like Dita Von Teese will look great with lipsticks that carry a blue undertone. In other words, they can rock the bright red lipstick very well. Medium skin should look into brown and earthier tones, but can even dip their feet into some blue-based lipstick. They have a slightly bigger range in terms of red lipstick choices. For those with dark skin, you can try purples and burgundies as a first choice.

But as I've constantly mentioned, these are merely tips and not rules. You should wear what's best for you. If the sales associate, your friends, your aunts, your cousins, even your mother, tells you the lipstick looks great on you but you think it looks hideous, then it's definitely not worth keeping.

Red lipsticks do tend to have a dramatic flare and capture a lot of attention. But just be careful that you're not accidentally capturing the wrong kind of attention because you had a little common red lips accident: bright red lipstick stains on your otherwise perfect teeth. One of the preventives is to apply a layer of lipstick, blot it on a tissue, and then reapply another coat.

Also, use a lip liner to keep your red lipstick from bleeding outside the lines of your mouth. As for the color of the lip liner, stick close to nude, the same shade, or at most a shade darker than your lipstick if you just can't find it (remember you're not in the 90s anymore so you wouldn't want dark lip liner rimming your lips).

And consistent with the Fall Makeup Trends 2011, red lips with a twist is the it makeup trend this season. So feel free to experiment and try something you've never tried before! Or if you already have that perfect color, add a little something to it for a change.
