Tucking In Your Shirt For Men

When you leave your shirttails un-tucked and hanging down past your fly, what does this say about you? Does it say that you are stylish and laid back, or does it create a messy appearance?

Of course, whether or not you should leave your shirt un-tucked depends on the type of shirt and outfit you are wearing. But by far and large, when men are leaving their shirts un-tucked, it is at times when they should absolutely be tucking them in. The un-tucked shirttails look is often an attempt to look laid back or slightly casual, when in fact you would be much better off looking polished and more dressed up. Similarly, would you consider wearing a rumpled, wrinkly suit as a way of trying to appear more casual? Probably not. You should wear a suit in the manner it is intended to be worn-- finely tailored and freshly steamed or pressed. Similarly, if you are wearing a button down dress shirt, you should tuck it in, in the way it is intended to be worn. You can instead rely on other accessories to appear more casual, if you wish.

Let's take, for example, an average fall date outfit: A blue and white striped button down shirt with a navy cashmere pullover sweater and a pair of khaki chinos. If you leave the shirttails hanging out below the sweater, they interrupt the line of the outfit, creating a messy look around your waist. Now tuck the shirttails in. See how much better this looks? You now have a streamlined, uninterrupted line from your torso downward. Your legs look longer and you look more polished, all from simply correctly tucking in your shirt. If you want this outfit to appear more casual, add a fashion sneaker and a newsboy cap. If you want it to appear more dressy, add an oxford shoe and a tie.

The above instance is a case in which you should always, yes always, tuck in your shirt. Other cases would be when you are wearing a suit, and most certainly when deciding what to wear to an interview. Whereas an un-tucked shirt will billow around your midsection and make you look boxy, a tucked in one will help to define your waist and give you a more masculine shape.

Now, it is important to note that the rules above apply to men's button down shirts. There are other types of shirts in your wardrobe that you should never tuck in. Shirts that you should leave un-tucked include:

Tee shirts

Pullovers

Sweaters

These three types of shirts should never, no never, be tucked into your waistband. This should be easy to remember, as you will notice that a well fitted sweater or pullover does not hang down far past your waistline anyway, but hits just about right at your belt buckle. While you should not tuck in tee shirts, you should also take care to not purchase those that are overly baggy. Look for slightly fitted tee shirts that are not too boxy around your waist.

When you look around the average office Christmas party, you'll see men milling about in red and green sweaters, or perhaps in an ill fitting suit and the same pair of brown leather loafers they wear to work each day. This year, don't be that guy! As I always say, there's nothing wrong with being the best dressed man in the room, regardless of where you are. And with party attire, you have quite a bit of freedom in terms of style and creativity. So use it to insure that you look your best at the Christmas parties you attend this year.







The first factor when considering what to wear is appropriateness. If the party is a black tie event, you wear a tuxedo, no questions asked. If it is semi formal, this is a little more open to interpretation. An evening event will be more formal than a daytime one. A party at a sophisticated candlelit restaurant will be more formal than one at a family style restaurant. Pay attention to the details of the party to figure out how formal it may be.







Now, one of the biggest mistakes that both men (and women) make when dressing for a holiday party is donning holiday "themed" attire. You should really not wear a sweater with Rudolph on it, or a tie with the image of Santa Claus. It's just not sophisticated enough for a company party. So instead of holiday "themed," think holiday "inspired." For example, wear a double breasted jacket with a bit of sheen to it over a button down shirt with a piped collar. Or layer your outfit in rich colors, such as an olive green button down shirt and a tie in dark purple. Other tie styles that work great for the holidays are those in metallics, such as silver, bronze, or gold.







Even though you may be partying with the same people you work with every day, it is important to not wear the same work outfit that everyone has seen you in before. Add a few special, discerning touches to your outfit, such as a colorful silk pocket square, or a pair of nice sterling silver cuff links. Another important touch is to wear a great pair of dress shoes, not your normal everyday work shoes. Although this may sound like an exaggeration, it is completely true to say that people always notice shoes, and they are therefore an easy way to dress up any outfit. For a holiday party, I love a classic black and white wingtip oxford shoe.







Is it okay to wear a suit that you've worn to the office before? Sure it is. Again, just make sure to dress it up a bit. It is appropriate, regardless of the setting, for your Christmas party attire to be one step dressier than your normal office wear. If you wish to wear your favorite black suit, don't reach for your normal white button up oxford and red tie. Instead, try a white oxford with a black pin stripe, and a silver tie. Other color combinations that work nicely together are charcoal gray with chocolate brown; tweed with burnt orange or mustard yellow; and light gray with cobalt blue.







If the Christmas party invitation specifies "holiday casual wear" as the dress code, don't reach for your jeans. Instead try a nice pair of wool or cotton chino dress trousers with a button down shirt, sweater vest, tie, and sport jacket. If you want a little bit more of a laid-back appearance, try an open collar shirt, the vest from your three piece suit, and a pair of wool trousers or suit pants. Even without the Santa Claus tie, you'll look appropriately dressed for the holidays.

Blue Tie

This makes it a good choice for a job interview.

Brown Tie

Brown is traditionally thought of as being a very masculine color. If you want to soften the appearance of brown a bit, you can look for a brown tie with a blue or white pattern. Or, if you want to enliven the appearance of brown, look for a brown tie with a red or burgundy pattern. Brown appears down-to-earth and reliable.

Purple Tie

Purple is a color that is traditionally associated with royalty, so wear it wisely. If not well balanced with a neutral such as gray (which appears calm and soothing), it can appear arrogant. A purple tie, however, can also appear creative and artistic. It is a color that is well worn by expressive and visionary men.
