Holiday Gift Ideas for the Biker In Your Family

By Ron Ayalon

It's never too early to start thinking about that special gift for the motorcyclist in the family. It doesn't matter whether that person is your husband, your wife, your brother-you name it-there's always some motorcycle related gift they would just love to receive. And it doesn't matter whether the rider is into cruisers (think Royal Star Venture S), sportbikes (love that Yamaha YZF-R1), or dual-sports (go for a V-Strom), there's always gear they want but just haven't had the extra cash to pick up. What better gift could there be?

One warning, however, before we proceed: Bikers tend to be very specific about the type of gear they prefer. Just rushing out and picking up any old pair of motorcycle gloves is not necessarily a good idea. Sure, you might get lucky, and that basic pair of doe-skin gauntlets you come home with might be exactly what your cruiser rider wants. Someone on a different type of bike, however, might be far more interested in some of those high-tech gloves that have padding on every finger and various other strategic locations.

Nope, it's better to inquire discreetly and feel them out. Let's stick with gloves. First, take a look at what they have now. Ask them what it is about their current gloves that led them to buy them in the first place. Have them explain the features and why each one is important to them. For instance, some gloves come with a little squeegee stitched to the back of the thumb, for wiping moisture off your helmet visor. Some people love that; others couldn't care less. Find out what it is that matters to your rider.

Next, inquire innocently as to what about their current gloves falls short of their desires or expectations. Are there other gloves on the market that offer what these lack? Why didn't they buy those instead of these? Would they choose differently if they were doing it again? Also, many bikers have more than one set of gloves, each for a different type of riding. It may be that they love one set of gloves they have but also want another type.

The key here, if you're looking to come up with something that will be a surprise, is not to make it obvious. Handle it in a manner that says you're interested in all this specialized gear that motorcyclists use. You know that designs are carefully thought out, and every feature plays a role, and you just want to understand a little better what that's all about. Leave your rider with that impression and they'll just think it's kind of cool that you're showing an interest. They'll never suspect that you have ulterior motives.

Of course, riding gear is only one broad area of gift possibilities. Sure, everyone needs gloves, a helmet, a riding jacket, and those sorts of things. But there is a much wider range of options in gear for the bike.

Many bikes come without luggage but every rider needs some way to carry stuff with them. Good luggage can be quite pricey, which can lead bikers to hold off on getting something they want very much. It's a perfect gift. And again, ask those innocent questions. How do you take things with you on the bike? Isn't that backpack inconvenient, not to mention limiting? When you do get around to buying luggage, what sort of bags are you hoping to get? Then you get to beat them to the punch.

Or maybe it's just farkles they want, which are those strings of LEDs that shine colored lights on the engine at night. Or a bit of chrome that makes the bike just a bit shinier.

The possibilities are endless. To buy gifts for a biker is to never run out of gift ideas. You just need to be a little inquisitive.
