How to Create a Vintage Chic Look This Autumn
By Jamie Simpson
Autumn comes, with starting back into the school year and cooler weather. Everyone makes transitions in their wardrobe. Some seem to do it effortlessly, but most of us secretly have a little trouble. Remember those classy, lovely women from sixty and seventy years ago? The change of seasons never caught them unaware, wondering how to keep up a fashionable appearance once their sundresses were put away. Why not take a cue from vintage fashion to create an effortless transition into your autumnal look.
- Have a Good Understanding of Vintage Style
If you want to replicate vintage fashions, it is important that you know what characterised the fashions of each era. Spend time looking over old fashion magazines, coffee table books about classic film stars, websites dedicated to vintage fashion. Figure out what decades suit your personality. Determine what styles from those eras flatter your figure. Make a list, if it helps. Then when looking through your closet or going shopping, keep these styles in mind.
- Know the Current Trends
Just because some styles were popular back in the day doesn't mean that they are an automatic success now. Fur coats, pinafores, shift dresses and baggy sleeves are stunning examples of vintage clothing styles that are popular today. If you stay on top of trends, you can pick out vintage clothing with more success. From colours to textures, silhouettes to skirt lengths, knowing what is in will keep you from making mistakes when wearing vintage styles.
- Combine Retro with Modern for a Classy Look
With an understanding of both vintage and what is acceptable in today's fashions, you have a blank slate to work on. Your surest success rests on mixing old with new. Wear the antique shirt dress with a really big, bright necklace and the tough, trendy boots. A fur coat from a vintage clothing store becomes that go to coat to wear with jeans on the weekend or an evening gown. Autumn means you get to layer more, so mix your cuddly granny sweaters with jeans and tee shirts and your brand new jackets with vintage dresses.
- Get Ready For Autumn
Cooler weather means you get to play with more outerwear. Vintage eras are famous for the gorgeous array of coats, hats and gloves. If you can find a few favourites in antique stores, you'll be well on your way to having a polished, ladylike vintage look. As you concoct mixtures of your summer wardrobe and autumn jackets and tights, and as you blend the modern flavours of classic retro styles, keep in mind what made those ladies from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s so chic. A big part of it was an understanding of style and colour, the dance of balance between boldness and subtlety. But much of it was also confidence, comfortableness in their own skin, knowing that they were women of worth whose decisions about what they wore were just right. Their autumn wardrobe worked because they believed it would.
You can find a wide range of vintage clothing at ASOS Marketplace.
