A few Do's and Don't for Women's Scarves
Author: toby
Do – use colour to your advantage. Women's scarves are perfect in that they can be used to offset whatever is worn underneath them, creating added impact, or toning down as required. A scarf is a really easy way to inject bright, bold, stylish colour into an otherwise neutral choice of clothes. Remember the colour wheel and that opposite colours complement each other. Alternatively, why not try going for the classic monochromatic look and experiment with a single block colour.
Don't – mix patterns. A plain scarf works best to offset a patterned outfit, and, in reverse, a plain outfit highlights a patterned scarf. Having both in some form of print creates a look that is far too busy and confusing to enjoy looking at.
Do – enjoy playing with texture. Again, this is a really easy way to add a bit of fun: try soft touch women's scarves with cashmere; go for a smooth finish with luxurious silk; or use glamorous fur to your advantage. This is perfect for the sophisticated monochromatic look as it adds excitement and a level of tactile interest to a style that has to potential to look boring. However, once again try not to go for something too bulky as it will overwhelm your shape and other clothes.
Do – use the scarf as a spotlight accessory. A large white scarf really stands out on an all-black background, and a spectacular, eye catching print will create a statement piece that is bound to get you noticed. However, women's scarves are not to be mixed with other accessories that may compete for attention – large hats, necklaces and earrings will make the head and neck look too busy.
Do – try to use scarves in dressy events. Large women's scarves can be draped over the elbows, giving you a classic style and an unfettered touch of elegance. Here it can also be used to cover bare shoulders in both respectful circumstances and when the evening starts to cool down, allowing you to wear that show stopping dress.
Do – experiment with knots and different ways of wearing women's scarves. Try a neck rose with a thin and light scarf (roll a section of the scarf up to look like a rose and then use the rest of the scarf to hold it in place by wrapping it tightly round the neck). Why not wrap a soft scarf twice tightly round the neck for something different and cosy in the cold. While just draping it over the shoulders may look classic and unfussy why not go for something different. Will a Parisian (folded in half lengthways put round the neck and pulling the ends through the loop made by the first fold) work where wrapping once round the neck did before, or would a loose cravat style suit best? Nevertheless, as an obvious but often overlooked issue, please always make sure you understand how to untie the knot before you try something different.
