Collaborating for a Cure—
Sheryl Crow teams up with the
SAMUEL WAXMAN CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION
for Annual Fête
With a sold-out crowd of nearly 1,400 guests, the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) celebrated the 13th Annual Collaborating For a Cure Dinner and Auction, headlined by Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow at the New York City landmark Park Avenue Armory. Performing fan-favorite hits, Sheryl brought the crowd to its feet with such songs as “If It Makes You Happy,” “Soak Up The Sun,” “My Favorite Mistake,” and her latest single “Summer Day.” Before taking the stage for her concert, Sheryl greeted the crowd and expressed her gratitude as a cancer survivor for everyone’s support of cancer research. One lucky winning bidder also had the chance to meet Sheryl backstage before her concert and received an autographed guitar from the songstress. As Sheryl later noted, “without foundations like the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, we would be much further behind in finding a cure.”
The triumph of the night was thanks to the hard work of event chairs Elin and Michael Nierenberg, Dale and Peter Claman, Alyssa and Cliff Greenberg, and Kristin Fizulich. Other notable guests included philanthropist Jean Shafiroff and daughter Jackie, SWCRF Executive DirectorGwen Darien, SWCRF Associate Scientific Directors Ethan Dmitrovsky, M.D. and Jonathan Licht, M.D, SWCRF Board of Directors Gary Gladstein, Musa Mayer and Spencer and Bettina Waxman, SWCRF Vice Presidents David Taub, Dena Weiner and Gary Jacob, Bald is Beautiful founder Sharon Blynn, Ceslie Armstrong, lifestyle and fashion reporter Katlean de Monchy, and TV personality Joe Terranova.
Introduced by SWCRF Board Chairman Michael Nierenberg, Dr. Samuel Waxman thanked guests, as well as the Foundation team, for continuing to support the breakthrough work of the SWCRF. As Dr. Waxman explained, “curing cancer one-by-one…is our ongoing goal” and encouraged everyone that despite the economic climate, “we must invest in fighting cancer, and SWCRF will give you the best return.”
The evening’s live and silent auctions offered guests the opportunity to bid on a selection of exciting items, including a Seven-Night-Stay for up to 10 guests in the Ian Fleming Villa at the Goldeneye Resort via Private Jet Service, which garnered the highest bid of the evening with $100,000. Once again led by C. Hugh Hildesley of Sotheby’s Auction House, the Live Auction raised nearly $1Million. Following the items, guests were invited to ‘bid on science,’ raising close to an additional $900,000 toward research.
With the glow of flickering candles and a rich chocolate brown and bright turquoise color palette setting the stage, leading Event Producer, Robin Lathrop and her BYROBIN event design and management team created a dazzling setting for the special evening, which they produced from top-to-bottom. A creative take on centerpieces, Robin forwent traditional floral arrangements and created centerpieces that celebrated the work of the Foundation, as they read: $75 Million and counting. 175 Researchers. 3 Continents. 35 Years of Breakthrough Research. As guests departed, they received a chicly designed keepsake CD that included highlights of past Collaborating for a Cure benefits and Journal Ads that were screened throughout the evening above the stage.
