CP - Guide to Layering Correctly

So I came into the office the other day and was instantly met with a blog request and a question. Whether or not it is okay to layer v-neck shirts. I had a pretty quick answer for this since I wear layered v-necks almost everyday, but it made me think more about the whole layering trend. It’s something that can make great outfits, but can also make you look absolutely terrible.

The first thing I would like to touch on is double popped collars. Personally, I don’t think it would be possible for me to even explain how big of a problem this is. There is no need to wear two polo’s at one time EVER unless your Halloween costume is the king of frat boys. Now that we have that out of the way let’s move on to some more constructive things.

Layering is great when you want to add some flair to your outfit, but not make a huge statement. You can easily contrast colors by layering tank-tops or wearing a flannel button-up over a couple shirts. This works well because the print of the outer shirt can work with the lower ones to pull together a more complete outfit. Another look I really like, and that has gotten super popular is the skirt with leggings combo. This makes it possible to wear skirts when it’s cold outside instead of having to wear pants all winter long.

The problem with layering is when you can create what is known as the “blob effect.” This happens when things people layer become lumpy and don’t work well with each other. You can typically avoid this if you follow the rule; the thicker the garment, the closer it should be to the top of the layer. Another good rule to follow is making sure to wear lighter colors UNDER darker colors (i.e. wearing a white shirt under a black shirt looks much better than vice versa).

What kind of ideas do you all have for layering? Do you think it’s a good idea or something that shouldn’t be used often?
