A Woman's Guide to Looking Gorgeous - In What You Wear, Whatever the Occasion

A Woman's Guide to Looking Gorgeous - In What You Wear, Whatever the Occasion
By Faye Gipson

Over the years in my work as a couturier I have had various questions put to me relating to women's garments, from what colour do you think suits me, what's the right design for me, to does this make me look bigger, skinny, you name it, I've heard it.
Above all of the questions, the one that is always at the forefront is how to look good, great, gorgeous, and feel fantastic, as ultimately the two go hand in hand.
With this in mind I have put together a series of articles which I hope will address some of these queries. There have been lots of brilliant televisions shows involved in the transformation of slightly mismatched duckling to elegant swan. Gok Wan gets down to the bare basics, whilst Tinny and Susannah sighed with what were you thinking when you bought that dress/skirt/ top, or why did you buy that dress/skirt/top?
Let's face it, clothes are very emotive, no matter which tribal fashionista group they say you are placed in, or the bargain you couldn't resist, to the I needed cheering up so I bought a few things... all the way to, my friend's wedding is coming up and I've just got to look good, as my ex will be there, our clothes, say so much about us.
This is what I have discovered, there are 4 key elements that are our starting point once we have taken a good long 'honest' (not berating) look at our figure, and the fit of our clothes, they are:
Overall Fit
Posture
Undergarments
Silhouette the look
Each of these areas has their own merit, if are a fan of the Hollywood movies, the glamorous ladies and gentlemen of back in the day they possessed an allure that drew you in and held you captive with their magnetism; be it a period costume film such as Gone with the Wind to the other extreme of 1920's chic of Thoroughly Modern Millie.
The attention to detail in terms of fabric, cut, fit and finish, all were essential components to the overall look.
As lifestyles changed and television dramas became mini serialised movies, our appetites were fed with the large shoulder pads of the 80's as we welcomed in the look of Dallas and Dynasty as for the hairstyles, well that's a book in itself!
The shift to the 21st Century has seen the way we dress take on a more personalised look, with variety truly being the spice of life. However, throughout all of this, one thing that has remained constant is the overall look and fit of a garment, as to how you express yourself to the world, and those around you.
Clothes have their own language, just as the choice of colours that you choose to wear has its own influence.
I hope you have enjoyed this brief introduction; the next article will look at Overall Fit, to your gorgeous self - until next time.
