When you think of the spa experience what do you think of? Luxury, candle light, scents, and water are key elements to a spa. You can turn your bathroom into your very own home spa with these tips.
For everyday showers everyday towels are just fine, but a spa demands more. Splurge on several lush full size bath towels or even bath sheets for your spa. Keep the colors cream, white, or off white so you can easily remove stains. Add a full length terry cloth robe. Wash clothes, bath puffs, back brushes and loofahs let you get rid of dry skin.
Candle light adds ambiance to a bubble or therapy bath. Tea lights in candle holders placed in front of a glass window or mirror doubles the flickering light. Make sure that you put the candles where they are out of harm's way. You don't want to catch a towel on fire or have to worry about spilling hot wax on yourself. Unscented candles are best so they won't clash with the scent of any aromatic bath oils.
And speaking of scents, have a variety of fragrances. Essential oils derived from herbs, citrus fruits and flowers can be bought at health food stores, the Internet, and some drug stores. Match the scent to the mood. If you want to relax try lavender, if you need an energy boost use citrus and if you're in a friendly mood use a floral scent. You can add the oils to the candles to diffuse and intensify the scent. Light the candle and wait until there is a pool of melted wax at the base of the wick. Blow out the candle, add a few drops of essential oil to the pool of wax and then relight the candle. You can also add essential oil to the bath water as it's filling the tub.
Water is a key element to the spa experience. Try alternating a hot and cold shower and then finish in a warm bath to which you've added one cup of salt (table salt will do just fine) and one cup of baking soda. If you like you can add a cup of Epsom salts as well. The salts add buoyancy to the water and help draw out impurities.
A small refrigerator in the bathroom is a luxury but keeps you from having to traipse out to the kitchen for a cool drink or ice cubes for a treatment. Keep some of your perishable spa lotions and potions in the fridge to keep them fresh. Lemons, limes and oranges will stay for a few weeks. Put a small cutting board and knife so you can add slices of citrus to your bath.
