1) La Rambla - this world famous boulevard running from Plaza Catalunya down to the sea is an absolute must when you visit Barcelona. It takes around 20 minutes to wander down, but allow much more time, as it is easy to get distracted by the human statues, artists, fortune teller, flower stalls, cafes and shops. Alongside are shops, hotels, restaurants and the Liceu theatre; also just off to the side of La Rambla is La Boqueria market.
2) Sagrada Familia - this fairytale cathedral, designed by the well known Catalan architect Gaudi, is still unfinished. Work began in 1885 and still continues, funded by funds raised from entrance fees and donations.Other architects have taken on the project, using Gaudi's plans. Sagrada Familia means sacred or holy family, symbolised by the 18 bell towers are Jesus, Mary, the 4 evangelists and the 12 apostles. You have incredible views across Barcelona if you take the lift to the top.
3) Park Guell is a stunning, creative and peaceful park designed by Gaudi, which lies high above the city. It is named after Eusebi Guell who owned the land and employed Gaudi to design the park. Wander around the walkways, between columns, rest specially designed benches - everything in the very unusual and personal style of Gaudi.
4) Picasso Museum - Picasso has been proudly claimed by both Malaga (his place of birth) and Barcelona (where he was brought up), and both cities have excellent museums of his work. Barcelona's Museu Picasso was opened in 1963 and shows over 3,800 pieces of his work.
5) Montjuic Castle - set 170m above sea level with excellent views over the city and the sea, Montjuic Castle is an old military fortress surrounded by beautiful gardens. It was first built in 1641 and until 1960 was used as a military prison. To reach the castle you can take the cable car to the top of Montjuic mountain.
6) Olympic Stadium - this was used for the 1992 Olympic games, although originally built in 1929. It is situated in the Montjuic area, between Plaza Espanya and Montjuic Castle. It can hold 57,000 and is still used for sporting and cultural events.
7) Magic Fountain, Plaza Espanya - this amazing water and multi-coloured light laser show is free of charge and on every Thursday and Saturday, it really should not be missed.
8) Poble Espanyol - set within the area of Montjuic, this reconstruction of a traditional Spanish village, it is an open air museum, with regular activities for adults and children to learn traditional crafts such as glass blowing. By night it is also well worth a visit for the trendy bars and restaurants.
9) Barcelona Zoo and Park Ciutadella - the zoo is set within the park, both are well worth the visit. In the park you can hire small boats to row on the lake, or just simply relax in the sun.
10) Olympic Village & Barcelona Beach - the village on the beach was built to house sportsmen and their families, there are many restaurants, clubs and shops, making it ideal to visit literally 24 hours a day. When you need a rest, you can saunter to the beach for a snooze or a swim.
