A Bra That Fits Correctly - Do You Know What To Look For?
By Karen M Fox
Sometimes you know that a bra isn't right as soon as you try it on, but most of the time it isn't that obvious that it's doing nothing for your figure. I discovered this recently when I bought some new ones and my friends thought I had started to lose the weight I'm always complaining about. It was just a different bra that was making a difference in the way my clothes looked on me.
Researchers say that 80 percent of women are still wearing the wrong size. We should be fitted every year, because breast tissue changes with age, hormonal fluctuations, and as people gain and lose weight. Get used to changing because the average woman wears 6 different bra sizes throughout her lifetime.
The bottom band should be snug against your body, below breast tissue, and rest parallel to floor, front and back, the lower the band rests in the back the better the support. To make sure that it isn't too tight sit down. When seated your rib cage will naturally expand, and this will test for comfort.
The edges of the cups should lie flat against your breasts, if there is room, or the fabric is puckering, or you're bursting over the top and spilling out of the sides, you need a different size.
Underwire should surround and support your breasts, not dig into your flesh. If the wire pulls away from your chest in the center, then the cup size is too small.
The peak of your breast should rest midway between your shoulder and elbow. This is good uplift, giving you a "perkier" appearance. Look in the mirror, your breasts should face forward, they shouldn't droop or fall to the sides.
A proper bra size is especially important for girls and young women. If they can't find a good fitting bra then they are less likely to work out, and obesity for young people is still on the rise. Researchers who study breast biomechanics say the biggest problem is for bustier women, because the most supportive bras for these women are still being developed in research labs.
An incorrect bra choice can also cause discomfort and pain in your back, shoulders and neck, which over time, can lead to a decreased quality of life.
These are things to be aware of, but don't try to figure it out yourself. Get measured by a professional and get their advice on brands for your requirements. This is not an exact science, not every measuring system will be accurate for every woman. So get fit regularly and try different bras to see which ones work better for you, during each stage of your life.
